Stunt Design and Stunt Rigging in the film industry

Hollywood Stunt Coordinator Stunt Riggers

Stunt Riggers Hank Kingi and Mike Li on an NBC TV Show Promo

Stunt Design and Stunt Rigging is one of the most important jobs in Safety and Stunts that no one talks about or even knows about. Years ago the Grips would rig an actor to a wall or fly them in the air. As safety precautions have increased by OSHA regulations so has the cost of equipment and fabrication.  Stunt Coordinators spend sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars testing and designing equipment to be able to us it today.  Some of them even have an Oscar for the technical achievement they have made in film making.  One of the more famous stuntmen has been Kenny Bates “Transformers, Pearl Harbor, Con Air” and his design of custom stunt equipment you have scene being used in any Micheal Bay film.  Kenny has been with Micheal Bay from the beginning of his transition from music video and commercials to full length feature films.  It is that loyalty that a director gives a stunt coordinator to be creative and design the equipment it would take to make these great action films.

Other Action Designers like Stunt Coordinator – 2nd Unit Director Dan Bradley and Special Effects Supervisor Elia P. Popov  when they designed the Go-Mobile for the Bourne Identity Trilogy enabling the SFX and Stunt Department to cable on a car to a high speed moving platform with actors in the car delivering there dialogue while driving at a high rate of speed.

Using qualified Stunt Design and Stunt Rigging companies helps you get your safest and most dynamic action scenes.

Blue Man Group Performs Stunts At The Hollywood Bowl

Working a live stunt show has it own set of dangers, but The Blue Man Group, known for their awestruck behavior, wanted to add danger to their set.  Closing out the concert season at the Hollywood Bowl The Blue Man Group, one of the most successful live shows in the world, decided to add an exponential stunt to their show.  The creative team at the Blue Man Group contacted T-Minus Productions to design and create a stunt that would not only be dangerous but have the audience believe that they would be dropping their orchestra conductor Thomas Wilkins 190 feet into an air bag so that they could use his body to paint a picture.  This stunt would take weeks of preparation and design to make it exciting while keeping it safe.

VP of T-Minus Productions Lauren Pacheco would take lead on this project coordinating logistics and producing the stunt.  Planning and coordinating the prep and logistics took weeks working with creative to give them exactly what they wanted.  Live shows like Broadway’s Spiderman took months of rehearsal to set up safety protocols and still had problems in that department.  So Lauren working with Stunt Coordinator TJ White and used T-Minus Stunt Rigging company to draw up a plan on how to properly rig this stunt in the tight space given at the Hollywood Bowl.  The team at T-Minus knew they had to not only set a Stuntman to fall 190 feet in the air from a crane but do it multiple times for several shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Working with heights and using heavy equipment you always have to find companies that are production friendly. Crane company Champion Cranes (“Terminator 3″) was used for this project.  They have worked with T-Minus Productions on several projects and are very selective with which companies they work with in the film industry.

A decelerator wire system was used to hoist up Stunt Double Lance Jamison 190 feet in the air and drop at a high rate of speed landing into an air bag.  If you had a chance to watch this live show you would have seen the tom trickery of believing that the Conductor went up in the air and landing making his painting splat. The loud gasps from the audience were heard wide and far, followed by applause when the Conductor came out to the stage with the Blue Men and their painting. Another Live Show success for T-Minus Productions & T-Minus Stunt Rigging.

The Savviness of T-Minus Stunt Rigging

Stunt Rigging for Chris Brown Music Video

It’s Rigged!!

Movies, commercials, T.V. shows, music videos, and live action shows all have a common thread, Rigging.  To the viewer, it looks like people are flying, floating, falling uncontrollably, or even made to be  string puppets.  The skilled Stunt Coordinator can envision such spectacular and visually stimulating stunts by knowing how to rig the set to accomplish the unbelievable.

The use of rigging in music videos for such entertainers like N’Sync and Chris Brown, allows the artists to transform into the vision of the director’s imagination.  Stunt Coordinators incorporate cranes, truss systems, wires, and countless other techniques to get just the right effect.  The importance of SAFETY is of the upmost concern when utilizing these elements.  The equipment used, such as wires and ropes are made of the highest quality grade materials.  Truss and securing devices are rated for load and stability to ensure safety at all times.  Attention to these details is what makes TJ White one of the most sought after Stunt Coordinators in the business.

Rigging requires skill and sophistication that can only be achieved with years of experience.  TJ White has been in the industry for decades and has an amazing resume of projects completed.  Trust is a key factor in a Stunt Coordinator’s mind when choosing the crew.  The typical team required to successfully rig a stunt needs to be able to work independently. As a unit they create the structures, ramps, or setting up wires needed for the stunt.  Only the best technology is used for stunts requiring pulleys, harnesses, sheaves, and all equipment used to design the needed effect.
Hollywood Stunt Coordinator takes great pride and steps to ensure the SAFETY of all productions.  Our team of talented stunt professionals has created many amazing effects with the use of rigging.  Movies such as Spiderman and Batman would not be able to make characters fly into scenes out of the sky, hang upside down, or jump between buildings without the talents of rigging.

Check out some of the videos we have been able to use the same effects to allow Chris Brown to float, Justin Timberlake hang like a puppet, or even have two people fly 100ft in the air for Ne-Yo.

Making Commercials look “Badass”

Old Navy Commercial

Stunts in commercials have been making products, companies, and businesses look exciting and bold.  Adding such elements as bungee jumping (Bud Light), girls fighting in a water fountain (Go Daddy), high speed car/motorcycle maneuvers, drifting, even jumping over things (Fiat, NASCAR, Chevy), or a Sasquatch who gets picked on (Jack Links Beef Jerky).  Commercial stunts can be as minimal as riding a motorcycle into a Progressive ad to as big as doing a barrel roll in a Chevy Sonic for a Super Bowl Commercial.

Mountain Dew was one of the biggest Ad campaigns using exciting stunts to gain interest in their product.  Even Channing Tatum did a spot where he was in a Trans Am, does a barrel roll and grabs a Mountain Dew out of an unsuspecting patron’s hand outside of a convenience store.  Another great ad is for NASCAR, coordinated by TJ White, which shows being a FAN is fanatical, the precision driving and overall action made viewers notice how intense the sport of NASCAR can be.
Let’s not forget probably the most recent string of amazing commercials for Allstate Insurance, MAYHEM.  The use of actor Dean Winters, (OZ, Rescue Me, 30 Rock), has shown just how much you need to buy insurance.  The stunt coordinator,  Rene Mousseux, and rigging team have made that series of commercials unforgettable.  High falls, car stunts, pyrotechnics, and most of all… Safety, make those commercials successful and entertaining.

The biggest stage for any commercial is the Super Bowl, when companies pay up to $3.5million for a 30sec spot.  Even non-sports viewers will dial in to watch just the commercials.  Most will Google Super Bowl Commercials just to see them, which is why companies will strive to get the best bang for the buck.  That is where we come in, to exceed the imagination and limits to a campaign by integrating amazing stunts and add the WOW factor.

Stunts in the Blockbuster Film ‘Hunger Games’

Sci-Fi action thriller The Hunger Games (directed by Gary Ross) proves that audiences want to see action, drama, and perhaps more importantly, great stunt work!

To date, the film has grossed nearly $500M worldwide.  Critics have compared THG’s staying power to that of Avatar and Titanic. The film’s female centered cast and compelling action sequences have been credited as the key elements to the film’s success.

The Hunger Games’ stunt performers, as well as stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, and Liam Hemsworth, have called their THG stunt training the most intense of their careers. Stage Combat moves are abound in the film, with actors taking each other on with knives, bow and arrow, and seemingly anything they can get their hands on! The chaotic fight sequences keep the action moving and the audiences hearts pounding .

Action reigns supreme in this box office smash – as is the case with nearly all of the top grossing films in history.
